Stopped Formosa Plastics from Dumping
Foreign Toxic Waste in U.S. Communities Greenaction
played a leading role in stopping Taiwan chemical giant Formosa
Plastics from shipping mercury-contaminated waste across the
oceans to be dumped in the small California community of
Westmorland. Greenaction also alerted residents including
local Indian Nations and the media to Formosa
PlasticÌs attempt to dump the waste in Beatty,
Nevada. Greenaction then alerted Idaho and Washington
residents about the company's attempt to import the waste to
a dump in Idaho. Faced with strong resistance, Formosa
Plastics is now storing the waste at their company site in
Taiwan, where it belongs.
Ward
Valley Nuclear Waste Dump Project Halted Working with the
Colorado River Native Nations Alliance and a broad
coalition, Greenaction
helped bring the proposed Ward Valley nuclear waste dump
project to a halt. Greenaction joined tribal leaders and
Elders in traveling to Mexico for four days of events,
including a protest and Indigenous cultural event in front
of the U.S. consulate in Juarez, building international
opposition to the proposed dump. We have generated
thousands of phone calls, e-mails and postcards to Governor
Gray Davis. We will continue our efforts until the Governor
withdraws the permit application and stops the dump.
Won
Historic Victories in Zero Dioxin/Anti-PVC Plastics Campaign
Greenaction
played a leading role in building a broad
coalition of community, health, labor and environmental
groups in the Bay Area that succeeded in getting the
Oakland
City Council and the San
Francisco Board of Supervisors to pass unanimous
resolutions calling for an end to dioxin emissions and to
begin phasing out the poison plastic PVC wherever
possible
Shut the
I.E.S. Incinerators Campaign Escalated Greenaction and
allies have forced the Bay Area Air Quality Management
District to schedule the first public hearing ever on the
I.E.S.
medical and solid waste incinerators located in East
Oakland, California. The hearing will be November 3, 1999.
The incinerators emit dioxin, mercury and other chemicals
into our air.
We are
demanding the closure of these polluting incinerators and
replacing them with safer alternative technologies that will
protect jobs and the health of the workers and
community.
West
Oakland Residents & Greenaction Forced Caltrans to
Better Clean-up Toxic Contaminated Park Site in West
Oakland, California Under
pressure from the Chester Street Block Club Association and
Greenaction, Caltrans has agreed to more thoroughly
clean up the toxic contamination at the South Prescott
Neighborhood Park and to relocate nearby residents during
the work. Caltrans had initially planned to leave high
levels of lead in the soil, even though many young children
in the neighborhood will use the park daily.
Won Toxic
Cleanup Environmental Justice Victories in Arizona and
California Greenaction forced the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency to shut down toxic waste incinerators in
Maywood,
California and Goodyear,
Arizona after we proved they were emitting dioxin
and other chemicals. Greenaction alerted the impacted
communities, elected officials and the media. We and used
strong science and community organizing to win these
important victories. Greenaction is now working with these
communities and U.S. EPA to identify safer treatment
technologies for use at contamination sites.

and Justice for Midway Village Campaign Continues
Greenaction
works with residents in this toxic contaminated low-income
housing project in Daly City to pressure government agencies
and PG&E to relocate away from contaminated Midway
Village, and to be provided health care and compensation for
their illnesses, which plague this community built on top of
toxic waste.

spreading the word to encourage communities everywhere to
celebrate Earth Day in the Year 2000 by participating in and

Native
Village of Fort Yukon, Alaska and Greenaction Win Victory:
U.S.
Air Force Plan to Dump Asbestos Stopped: Greenaction
responded to a plea for assistance from the Gwichin
Athabascan community of the Native Village of Fort Yukon to
help stop the U.S. Air Force from dumping asbestos and other
waste materials in a dump next to this village. The Native
people of Fort Yukon already suffer high incidences of
thyroid problems, and are fearful of additional health
problems if the dump plan goes ahead.
Greenaction wins important victories,
empowers communities and changes government and corporate
policies to better protect health and our
environment.
